Alex Marquez drops out of MotoGP's Brno round

Alex Marquez has aborted his MotoGP return from injury at the Czech Grand Prix, withdrawing from the weekend after qualifying.

Marquez returned to MotoGP action at Brno after missing two rounds following his monster crash during the Catalan Grand Prix, when he slammed into Pedro Acosta's suddenly-slow KTM and then came perilously close to hitting the wall.

He had suffered a neck vertebra fracture - although has since insisted this was more minor than such phrasing usually implies - and more substantial damage to the collarbone, which he said was "broken in four pieces".

His only target coming to Brno was to progress through the weekend session by session - and he was passed fit to complete the weekend, while also admitting on Friday that he was feeling "much better than I was expected" and also running much quicker than he'd expected.

But while his qualifying performance was also solid enough - less than a tenth off a spot in Q2 - Marquez has now withdrawn from Brno.

His Gresini team says the decision was taken "with the aim of continuing his recovery in the best possible way".

The other rider under medical duress this weekend, Raul Fernandez, seems to be in the clear to see out the weekend - having struggled with an inflamed appendix in the lead-up to Brno.
