Andretti scored its first ever Formula E 1-2 in Sanya with Jake Dennis and Felipe Drugovich, as the top four in the championship all failed to score.
Points leader Mitch Evans was a lead factor before being vaulted over by Dan Ticktum's Cupra Kiro Porsche and then entangled with Zane Maloney's Lola Yamaha Abt in a multi-car tangle that caused a red flag.
Reigning champion Oliver Rowland crashed out late on in his Nissan, Pascal Wehrlein's Porsche was only 14th thanks to a penalty for hitting Norman Nato, and Edoardo Mortara retired after multiple incidents.
The Andretti duo had qualified 1-2 too, but had a far from straightforward route to the win amid the red flag, attack mode variations and plenty of chaos, before Dennis and Drugovich worked their way back to the top in the final laps.
Pepe Marti joined fellow rookie Drugovich on the podium having surged from last after the mid-race red flag to third for Cupra Kiro, as Porsche's customer teams filled all three podium spots.
Dennis's second win of the year brings him into title contention, fifth in the standings and 34 points behind leader Evans.
