Raul Fernandez led Sachsenring master Marc Marquez in the opening MotoGP practice session of the German Grand Prix weekend.
Marquez crashed exiting Turn 3 on just his third lap of the session, but shrugged off the low-speed fall - and soon took over in the top spot.
Only a run on fresh tyres, soft front and medium rear, from Fernandez at the end of the session denied nine-time Sachsenring MotoGP winner Marquez.
But Ducati stablemate Fabio Di Giannantonio was just half a tenth back from Marquez in third for VR46, without equipping a fresh set of rubber. And Gresini's Alex Marquez - who likewise stayed with the same tyres - ended up just 0.173s off the pace in sixth, behind the fresh-tyred pair of Joan Mir (Honda) and Jack Miller (Pramac Yamaha).
In addition to Marc Marquez, there were crashes for Franco Morbidelli (at the same corner) and Maverick Vinales (at the high-speed 'Waterfall' Turn 11).
But both rejoined the session, Morbidelli placing within the top 10 and Vinales the top KTM in 11th.
