Raul Fernandez took his first ever MotoGP pole at the Indonesian Grand Prix, with main title contenders Marc Marquez and Jorge Martin only fourth and fifth and Aprilia slightly less dominant than expected.
Marco Bezzecchi has a shot at regaining some championship ground as he starts second, and may well have had pole had he not had to back out of a better lap for final-corner yellows after Q1 pacesetter and 2025 Indonesian GP weekend Fermin Aldeguer crashed.
Even Ducati expected Aprilia to run away with the Mandalika weekend, and it does at least have a 1-2 on the grid via Trackhouse rider Fernandez and factory man Bezzecchi.
But its chances of a 1-2-3-4 were already dented by Ai Ogura's messy Friday leaving him in Q1, in which he crashed again but still scraped through to the pole shootout.
Ogura only had the pace to qualify seventh in Q2, with Martin never a pole threat either and starting fifth - potentially distracted along the way by Marquez attempting to follow him as both got checked up behind Fernandez while preparing for fast laps.
VR46's Fabio Di Giannantonio was the main surprise of Q2 as he stuck his Ducati on the front row in third ahead of Marquez.
Aldeguer's sixth on the grid was a decent salvage given he'd had to come through Q1 and then crashed in Q2.
Q1 itself had been absolutely crash-strewn: Johann Zarco falling twice before he'd even set a laptime, the second time in a simultaneous crash with Jack Miller, whose Pramac Yamaha team-mate Toprak Razgatlioglu had already temporarily dislocated his shoulder in a vicious crash in the preceding practice session before popping it back in and continuing with qualifying.
Zarco's LCR Honda team-mate Diogo Moreira also had a Q1 fall, as did Tech3's Enea Bastianini and Ogura.
